
Elizabethan Era

The Elizabethan Era know to be the time of political stability.
Throughout this time period Queen Elizabeth became the Queen of England in 1588, this was 6 years before Shakespeare’s birth. Over her reign, London became a cultural and commercial center for art and literature. The theaters were mainly open venues to perform plays.

Although the clothing was a very significant piece in their culture there were laws to what people were allowed to wear. For example; everyone who was above the age of 6 had to wear woolen caps on Sundays and holidays.

This was the golden era for explorers and sailors such as Christopher Columbus and Sir Francis Drake. As they explored and brought a whole new side of the world to England.


Heath care was simple, there was medicine such as tobacco, lilies and leeches which were used to remove blood.

The education for children begin at home and they would later attend the “pretty school” from the ages of 5 to 7. Afterwards boys were allowed to attend grammar schools from the ages of 7 to 14. But as for girls, only the girls from privileged families were able to get more education. Their classes were often held in the household of acquaintances who offered to educate girls. Which is where they were taught to read write and household skills. Boys were expected to start work right after they graduated school only the privileged went to university.

After Queen Elizabeth died, King James stepped up to reign over the British Empire.
